I Couldn’t Copy McSweeney’s Before, But I Possibly Could Now

A few weeks ago I wrote about how satire has the potential to make your site go viral, but you have to be careful when pulling it off.

One of the examples I used in the post was from McSweeney’s, who wrote a satirical article about only hiring employees who are twenty-three years old.

This month they’re at it again, with a different approach.

Last Friday they published an article titled, “The About Us Page of Every Digital Media Agency”.

While the article is only six days old, it has already been ‘Liked’ on Facebook almost 5,000 times, and made its way onto my Twitter stream today (I only follow 160 people).

This time they relied on humor to get people talking, rather than satire, by making fun of what you expect to see on the about page of a marketing agency.

Here’s a sample of what they wrote.

While that’s just a sample, the article continues in the same format.

So the angle here isn’t satire, it’s humor (or humour if I’m staying true to my British roots).

Is there something in your industry you can make fun of, that would also make people say “That’s so true”?

The McSweeney’s article went viral because people could relate to the post. As someone who has looked at enough marketing agency (or design agency) websites to last a lifetime, it’s “so true” that this is what you’ll find.

While you still have to be careful about trying too hard to be funny, I think there’s less risk here than a satirical article going wrong.
