A Simple Way to Provide a Ton of Value (And Have Other Webmasters Love You)

Sending readers elsewhere can attract a lot of backlinks.

What’s the most common thing you see on websites these days?

A logo? A navigation bar? A contact page?

OK…the second most common thing you see on a website these days?

Some kind of opt-in form and usually a giveaway to go along with it.

No matter what niche you’re in, there are going to be people in your industry who offer ‘freebies’ in order to entice readers to join their email list.

What if you curated the best ones in your niche?

Your initial thinking might be “Why would I promote the email lists and content of my competitors?“, but I have to point you back to this newsletter idea which only promotes their competition, yet is absolutely loved in their industry.

Design website Speckyboy used this exact idea to pick up links from over 330 different websites and get shared on social media by almost everyone they featured.

They put together a list of “50 Free eBooks for Web Designers” and linked out to their peers.

This simple article does quite a few things:

  • It sends traffic to other sites so they’ll notice you in their analytics data
  • You have a genuine reason to reach out to other ‘players’ in your niche
  • Your audience gets a ton of value as they only click on the eBooks that interest them
  • You show authority by having a great understanding of sites in your industry


I think the reason I don’t have more examples of this is because people are scared to link out to others in their space.

I practice what I preach — notice how I keep talking about that marketing newsletter, even though I’m likely sending them more subscribers.

Sure, they’ve mentioned me on their emails before, but that’s not the point. The point is that it really doesn’t hurt, and instead comes with a number of benefits.

Just look at how many links it has picked up.

I know it’s Friday, but if you have a spare couple of hours over the weekend, this could be a fun project to not only learn about other sites in your niche, but help find the best content you can share with your audience.

If you do put something like this together, make sure you reach out to every single person who was featured.
